Beartooth Pass and Mountains

Beartooth Pass and Mountains

In talking to some of the camp hosts here at the RV park, several recommended a day drive to Beartooth Pass, a famous motorcycle drive and very scenic drive that people have highlighted over the years in the media.  I decided to make a day trip, first was a drive to Cody, Wy to catch up with the parents of our VA friends.  We got to know them when they lived in VA and when they retired, they moved to Cody.  I figured lets drive to Cody, see them and then take the Beartooth pass back to Billings.  Things lined up with their schedule and I got to see John and Demity and their 2 year old Golden Retriever.  Since I was going to be gone all day, I had the girls with me and they seemed to have fun trying to boss around this hyper puppy.  After a nice lunch and visit, I headed North out of Cody and up into the mountains….

Some of the great mountain meadows coming to life in the spring…
Fist signs of snow still clinging onto the early summer heat…

I just came across this stream by the side of the road, roaring with the snow melt….

Once you reach part of the way you hit this stop called “top of the world”, a flat high mountain plain full of snow…
Long Lake was still frozen on top, on the 9th of June…
“Where are you going dad?”

Up at the pass, the snow was like 10 feet tall…

I am at the top of the pass, and there was a lot of people parked up here…. I wondered why…
This snowmobile was bringing up skiers from below up to the top on the right so they could ski down
You can see a skiers heading down while the snow mobile goes and picks up another skier. Who needs a chair left….

I ended up seeing quite a few pockets where this self made ski resort was set up, so if you want to ski in June, here is how you do it….

I started heading down the other side with huge sweeping switchbacks down a steep slope of the mountain…hard to describe….

Here is am image from the Internet of the switchbacks coming down from the pass…
another representation of the drive…

Overall it was a fun drive, it took all day to do but I can see why some folks call this the most beautiful drive in America.  That is part of the Journey we are on, the RV takes us to interesting areas where well know attractions are, like the Little Big Horn battlefield, but we find talking to locals about other things to go see.  There are other Indian war battlefields nearby, there are huge mountain ranges that gave great day trips to take, there are neat towns to explore, and we get to reconnect with friends that moved on and retired across the land.  So after a stop for groceries, it turned into a 12 hour day with about a two and 1/2 visit sandwiched in between.

  1. So very beautiful, it is a shame that people who haven’t explored our country think that they have to go overseas to see such wonderful scenery.
