Lazy L& L Campground

Lazy L& L Campground

So it has been awhile since I last posted.  After traveling through an unexpected ice storm, which I do not recommended ever doing again in a 40,000 lb RV, the overpasses were especially dicy, we were going like 25 mph on the interstate.  We were about 1/2 way here and although they were putting sand down, it was slow going and way too much white knuckle driving, so next time I will do a better job checking the weather and…

Solar Install

Solar Install

In a previous post I discussed the design of the solar system I was going to put into the RV.  This is our Christmas present for the RV this year. The work was done by Greg who runs RV Solar Solutions.  We agreed to meet at Lazy L&L campground near Canyon Lake,  which is north of San Antonio, just in the start of Texas Hill Country.  The closest town is New Braunfels, Tx.  The campground sits right on the Guadalupe River and…

Coach Automation 101

Coach Automation 101

So most of the coach controls for lighting, vent fans, shades and such are controlled by several touch panels that are around the RV.  Each panel is set to control those things nearby, so the shades control is in the main salon panel.  But what if your sitting down and don’t want to get up to change something? Two Tiffin owners got together and created a simple computer to plug into the control system used on the RV to allow…

Solar and other possible future enhancements….

Solar and other possible future enhancements….

One of the things we have learned is that when doing the parking lot camping, we were running the generator to keep the batteries charged and to run the AC.  The plan in the future is to reduce the AC need by either moving North or gain more altitude when it is so hot we need AC.  As for keeping the batteries charged, we have some major electrical draws like the refrigerator that will such down the batteries in a…

Yorktown pre-deployment operation

Yorktown pre-deployment operation

So, I had to make a trip down to the Newport News area for a meeting so I decided to find a RV park and take the RV instead of staying in a hotel, a win-win since I would be saving the taxpayers (most, if not all of you) some money and I get to stay the weekend and test out the RV some more as we get closer to full time living in it. I was able to reserve…

All that work just for a few more cup holders….

So after the trial fit, I took the boxes home to get sanded, stained, clear coated, cut the holes for the cup holders and then took it back to the RV and installed it.  The lot was very hot, outside was close to 100 degrees, but I kicked on the generator and with all three A/C units running, it was cooled down to a more tolerable level.  I took a bunch of stuff from the house including one of the…

Some maintenance and coach upgrades

Some maintenance and coach upgrades

While working and waiting until November to finally retire and get on with the full time RV life, I needed to attend to some simple maintenance items.  First up was the generator needed its first oil change.  The Onan 10KW generator is a three cylinder diesel engine and required a oil change after the first 50 hours.  After the weekends at National Harbor I had racked up about 53 hours so I figured I might was well do this simple…
