So early on I added a way to use email so folks can sign up and get automatic email notifications when I post something to the Blog, and a few number of folks have signed up for this service. But recently, I was talking to a family friend who basically does not use email at all, she is more often than not using text to communicate. As I thought about my kids, text seems to be the easiest way to reach them, so I wondered if I could use text to send notifications to folks that I posted something witty to the blog.
I found this program called Clockwork SMS Notifications that has a simple plug into WordPress blog software that I use. I put a SMS (Text) Notification sign up on the homepage, it is simple to use, you say what country, cellular carrier and put your phone number in. What happens behind the curtin is the Web site sends an email to the cellular carrier which then ports it into a simple text message to the use that says “RV Greenboard just posted new content” and links to the post so you can select the link and go right to the web page. Pretty slick and neat way to get notifications, so try it out and tell me what you think.
Here is some additional information on SMS:
Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service component of phone, Web, or mobile communication systems. It uses standardized communications protocols to allow fixed line or mobile phone devices to exchange short text messages.
SMS was the most widely used data application, with an estimated 3.5 billion active users, or about 80% of all mobile phone subscribers at the end of 2010. The term “SMS” is used for both the user activity and all types of short text messaging in many parts of the world. SMS is also employed in direct marketing, known as SMS marketing. As of September 2014, global SMS messaging business is said to be worth over USD 100 billion, and SMS accounts for almost 50 percent of all the revenue generated by mobile messaging.
